Friday Feature -- Liz's Wares

1. Are we teammates on any Etsy Teams? I belong to Etsybloggers, Etsymom, CCCOE, and I’m the captain for SF Etsy.

Etsybloggers is the only one we match on; but I am also in Deviant Art, Etsy Blog Team, MULTIPLE SHOPS on ETSY, Vintage Lovers, Craftcount, Top Treasury, Stumble-I can't even stand up straight, MADE IN USA, I Love Art, beads, Handmadeology, HeartsyOfficial.

2. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

My main medium is beads and findings. I love making bracelets, earrings and necklaces. I mostly lean fantasy princess-like pieces, but intend on branching to other styles as well soon.
When I was younger I loved making bracelets with pony beads and whatever string I could find. When I was about 14 I finally got the internet and my world opened up to the knowledge of stretch cord, chains, clasps, etc.

I love the design process when I start with a small set of beads and search to see what else I have that would look great with them. I've added to my collection of tools over the years as well.

I love knowing that I'm creating something that will be worn by someone who will feel great about wearing that piece. Whether it's a casual bracelet that becomes their daily favorite, or a special necklace that they chose for Prom or their wedding day!

3. Tell us two (or more) other interesting things about you.

I have also been perfecting my sewing skills too. I intend in the next year or two to open more shops which include LizsHome, LizsClothes, and LizsVintage.

I've created profiles for them, but haven't opened yet. Feel free to add them to your circle so it may be easier to keep an eye on them.

4. How did you get involved with Etsy?

A friend of mind from community college introduced me to Etsy as well as glass beads! She was heaven sent.

I had planned from the first day of seeing Etsy to open up shop. So I created a bunch of items, and researched as much as I could about Etsy.

Then in October 2009 LizsWares was born! I am so glad to have found such an open and caring group in Etsy to share in the experiences of running a small business.

5. What is your favorite item in your shop (currently for sale or previously sold)? Why is it your favorite?

I love this bracelet for many reasons- the beads are gorgeous, it was fun to create. But mostly I love it because when I put it on just after creating it I felt like I had finally found what I really wanted to do with my life. That was to create!
I know that my passion is creating and that I'll never give that up for anything.

6. If you had a gift certificate to Etsy for any one item you wanted, what would you buy?

I would love to have a beautiful vanity to sit at. I currently use a hand mirror in front of my computer, lol.

7. What crafting skill(s) do you wish you had or hope to learn someday?

I'd love to learn carpentry so I can build the furniture that I wish I had now and want for my future dream home.

8. If money were no object for just one day, what would you do?

I'd travel to as many places as I could to buy amazing fabric and beads. I'd most likely start in Europe.

9. Where else can we find out more about you and/or your creations?

1. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft?

I have always loved doing something creative, whether knitting, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, painting, and for the past few years designing my own jewelry, all of which I have taught myself.

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a creative nature within. The many Necklaces, Bracelets and Earrings in my shop are all created and designed by myself. As I just started making jewelry a few years ago, it has and still is a learning process. I never had any intention of selling my work, I would just give it away.

As for my knitted and crocheted items which are in my newest shop, “MagdaleneKnits” - when I found out that my daughter was going to have her first child (my first grandchild) I started crocheting little baby booties, and baby sweaters, and other little baby items, even a little lamb for Easter. I originally had scarves and neck warmers in my jewelry shop, but they have now been relegated to my “knit” shop as well. For any of you who do knit or crochet, you will understand when I say it is a very relaxing activity?

When I first started, I never had any intention of selling my work, I would just give it away. If someone said how much they liked a certain piece, well, it was then theirs – I still tend to do this with my friends, even when they want to pay me

2. Are we teammates on any Etsy Teams?

Besides being a member of the “EtsyBloggers Team”, I also am a member of the “Bbest Team”. Since I opened my Knit/Crochet shop I have joined the “CreateCrochet Team”, and “CrochetOriginals Team”.

3. What is involved in your creative process?

I imagine my creative process evolves from my own personality, and what one would term my very vivid imagination. In my “Jewelry” shop, often I will see a beautiful color crystal, which when in the light can reflect so many possibilities that my mind becomes absorbed in a certain moment or feeling or a certain song will come to mind, from there the creativity begins. The same inspirations and creativity can be found in my Knitting and Crochet work. As you can see from most of my pieces, I am one who is truly a romantic and love the feminine aspect of my being.

4. Tell us two (or more) other interesting things about you.

I think the most important achievement I have accomplished are my three children, Kelly, Keith & Ryan. I have been a single mother since the boys were infants, which only made us closer as a family. No matter what, they have always been there for me, as I have been for them. For those that read my blogs, you know that my newest joy is my little grandson Zachary, who just turned 2 in October!

In between all of this, I am also member of a local theater group as their costume designer, as well as having had a few small parts in some of their plays. I have also managed to joined forces in my work, while designing the costumes, I have also designed jewelry pieces for some of the actresses to wear on stage.

5. What inspires your creations?

I imagine that my inspirations evolve from my own personality and what one would term my very vivid imagination. As all my pieces are made with Swarovski Crystals, often I will see a beautiful color crystal, which when in the light can reflect so many possibilities that my mind becomes absorbed in a certain moment or feeling, or a certain song will come to mind, and from there the creativity begins. Those that truly know me will understand this. As you can see from most of my pieces, I am one who is truly a romantic and love the feminine aspect of my being.

6. What is your favorite item in your shop? Why is it your favorite?
This necklace which I call “The Rose” after one of my most favorite song, “The Rose” by Janis Joplin. It’s Victorian, very feminine look reflects a lot of my inner self.

7. What advice do you have for other folks selling or buying on Etsy?

Firstly, I would say to enjoy what you do, that is where you will find your creativity. I also suggest to those that are not part of a team to find one that relates to what their craft is, or interests. One, it is a good way to promote your work, and definitely do some Treasury’s – they are a lot of fun to put together. Also, definitely communicate through your Blogs, Facebook or Twitter, they are good networking tools. Most importantly since I have been here at Etsy, is not the sales I have made or hope to make, but it is the dear friends I have made during the past few years. We are there for each other during our many ups and downs, and very supportive during the many obstacles we often are challenged with.

8. If you had a gift certificate to Etsy for any one item you wanted, what would you buy?

These earrings -- actually I would love anything from this shop!! It is my favorite Jewelry shop – I purchased one of their rings “Karma” which I always wear.

9. Which one song describes your life the best? Why?

I would definitely have to say “Let it Be” by the Beatles. When I find life gets to much, and things have let you down, I start singing “Let it Be” and the words “speaking words of wisdom” brings an inner peace and I try to see things in a different light.

Guest Blogging for Success

To be successful online we all try to market our brands in the most prolific manner and are always on the lookout for productive ways to advertise and get seen. And advertising can be done in many subtle ways without annoying our readers.

Guest blogging is one of the most cherished (and rightfully so) ways of popularizing ourselves and our brands, regardless of which side of the fence we are at - the guest blogger's or the host's. If you have noticed, the most successful blogs on the net regularly invite guest bloggers. I also love my experience as a guest blogger and as a host equally well and here are some of the reasons why:

From the guest blogger's point of view:

Get backlinks

It is considered good manners when you are invited to guest blog to be allowed to add a link to your blog/website/etsy store and this is great because it is a wonderful way to create backlinks and make your blog's rating higher. By writing a guest post you get the chance to have a permanent link pointing back to your own blog!

Show yourself in a different light
Guest writing for another blog makes your brain change the frequency it works on and you may come up with great new approaches or themes. This will ultimately have a great effect on the development of your writing style, and it can lead to amazing new personal discoveries!

Get quality traffic

When you offer your expertise to a new readership you get not only exposure but new fans as well! People are naturally curious and if you manage to catch their attention, many of them will click on your link to find out more about your knowledge and interests. What better way to gain even more followers!

Spread the word

When you guest post you take advantage not only of the readership but also of the distribution network of the host and your article may get quite popular. Consider the host's Twitter and facebook followers and you will get a rough idea how many people you didn't know will be able to read your words and probably re-distribute them!

Break the routine

As much as your readers love you, they would appreciate a new "voice". Opening up for guest bloggers will allow you to make a change in your blogging routine and maybe even give you new ideas. It will also provide you with time to work on your SEO or anything else you deem valuable for your blog.

A guest blogger will offer a different perspective on a theme you and your readers are passionate about. This will inevitable raise the interest towards your blog and very soon you will be able to see a change in your Stats.

Have new conversation points

By inviting guest bloggers to your blog you offer your readers diversity and new themes. What is more, a guest writer can have a slightly different point of view which will invariable sparkle discussions and will liven up your blog.

Gain new readership

Guest bloggers are also social! They would love to brag about their latest article, published on your blog, thus creating more links for you and bringing more traffic your way. They will also mention their post on their own blogs, so this is a wonderful way to attract new followers and backlinks.

Original content

A very important aspect for both guest bloggers and blog hosts is publishing original content. Many people are willing to copy and paste a previously published article on your blog but since February 2011 Google stopped indexing duplicate information. You can read Google's point of view and reasons why they consider duplicate content spam here.

So, quite in line with this information I must admit that I love my guest writers and have so far had great experience with their contributions! EtsyMini Monday featuring MamasMagicStudio: Handmade Jewelry, Knitting Needles, and Beadwork

In the handmade market place there are a wide variety of jewelry artists and artisans out there to browse through. But, sometimes it becomes difficult to find those that offer something truly original.

How to Find Free Photos for Your Blog

Maintaining an impressive blog which attracts many followers inevitably has to do not only with the content but with the illustration as well. We humans, are visual creatures and having that in mind, the smart blogger should take care to provide an additional reason for her readers to keep coming back!

I recently talked about how important eye candy is in creating quality blog posts and in attracting more traffic to your blog. If your photo archive doesn't cover the theme of your latest blog post, you can find photos and illustrations shared freely on the Internet. Believe it or not, a lot of photographers and graphic designers are not driven by money. They want to share their work with the world, under specific conditions, which almost always include being credited for their work.

Below I have listed in alphabetical order 15 sources of quality free photos and images on the Internet. Whatever source you decide to use, ALWAYS credit the artist, link back to them and, when possible, send a link. This is the best and easiest way to thank someone who has been so generous as to offer her creative work to you for free. By taking the time to be courteous and polite you will allow the artist to link back to your site and not only to show potential customers how her work has been used but to direct even more traffic to your blog!

Creative Commons

Creative Commons helps you search through Google Images, Flickr, etc. to find free photos. It offers you to search according to your need - for commercial purposes or to modify and build on the photo. I often use photos whose modification is allowed and add a little something from me, like change the hue or brightness, or crop the image the way it suits me. But be careful because you should always verify that the work is actually under a CC license by following the link of the photo displayed.

EveryStockPhoto

EveryStockPhoto is a search engine for free photos that come from numerous Internet sources and are license-specific, currently searching through more than 10 million of photos. You can view a photo's license by clicking on the license icon, below and left of photos. Membership is free and allows you to rate, tag, collect and comment on photos.

Flickr

In Flickr there are always plenty of images available for free use. To search for them, in "Everyone's Uploads" you need to type in your keyword and under "Advanced search" you will have to click on "Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content". Of course, it would be good taste to link back to the original image. I usually do that in the caption of the photo.

FreeDigitalPhotos

FreeDigitalPhotos.net offers free images for use in corporate and personal projects. Downloading is made easy by instant download and lack of registration requirement.

You need to credit the person who created the image and instructions for publishing credits can be found to the right of every image. If you don't want to do that, you can purchase a license, starting at just $3 per image.

FreePhoto

FreeFoto.com is made up of more than 130 000 images organized in sections and categories.According to the site, it is the largest collection of free photographs on the Internet.

The easy to navigate site offers images that are free for online use, with higher quality versions available for sale. FreeFoto.com also features exclusive images found nowhere else on the web with new pictures being added every week. It is required that you link back and attribute the images you use.

FreePhotosBank

You can search the site by keywords in various fields and you can download files in two different ways, as a .jpeg file or as a .zip file. The first option is suitable if you wish to open the image or media file in your browser for viewing, but also for saving it on your hard drive. The zip download is better if the image or media file is very large and you wish to save it on your hard drive. However, this option requires that you have a zip extractor program available.

FromOldBooks

FromOldBooks is run by Liam Quin, who says he owns a lot of old and antiquarian books with really neat pictures in them. He says: "I thought it was a shame that no one but me could see them, so I started putting them online."

On his website you will find over 3,000 high-resolution free images scanned from more than 180 different old or rare books, with extracts. The author of the site requires that you let him know if you use any of the pictures by linking back and sending him a link of your post.

ImageBase

ImageBase is a collection of high quality photos of nature, people, cities, and objects taken by David Niblack. The site clearly states that all images are 100 percent free to use. You can use the images on the website for whatever you want, personal, commercial or non-profit use for free. They are licensed under the "Attribution (by)" Creative Commons License. In short, you are free to distribute and modify the files, commercial or otherwise, as long as you attribute its author (David Niblack).

PDPhoto

PDPhoto.org is a repository for free public domain photos. As the owner of the site puts it: "Unless something is clearly marked as being copyrighted, you can assume it is free to use. But if you intend to use an image you find here for commercial use, please be aware that standards for such use are higher."

If you use pictures from the site, PDPhoto requires you to put the text "Photo courtesy PDPhoto.org", link back and/or give credit to the author. Anyway, the owner continues: "But you don't have to. Feel free to leave a message in the comment area for the image you're using if it's something you can link to. The pictures are free for you to use and you should feel good about doing so."

PixelPerfect

Pixel Perfect offers more than 7 000 photos and 3D graphics by 13 000 photographers. You can rate and see how many times an image has been viewed. You can download and use photos as long as you credit the author and keep them for non-commercial use.

Photo Rogue

Photo Rogue is a non-profit web site whose main goal is to increase the amount of free visual media on the Internet. Currently they offer about 700 photos organized in 94 albums

The cool addition to Photo Rogue is that you can even request a picture and volunteer photographers will go out and attempt to take it. It's entirely free, although the owners of the site cannot guarantee that your request will ever be filled.

Stockvault

Here you will find over 25 000 free amazing photos for personal and non-commercial use by various photographers, both professional and amateur.

You can rate photos, see their EXIF, see the date they were taken and much more.

Stock.xchng

One of the best resources of free images online, launched in 2001 as an alternative for expensive stock photography. The site has developed a lot and currently offers about 400 000 high quality photos from amateur photographers from around the world. How to Attract More Traffic to Your Blog

Today I am going to tell you how to attract more traffic to your crafty blog. Of course, there is no magic formula and it is not easy but once you decide to develop your blog you will find yourself yearning for more and more traffic, which will of course lead to more popularity of your etsy shop, and eventually will lead to more sales. Because, let's admit it, creating your fabulous items is not enough, you have to market them!

It would be great if you have already built a faithful readership before you start your etsy store, but even if you haven't, it is never too late, why don't you start today! Running a blog is a totally different experience than creating with your hands but it can still be considered hand work, which means that you can do it!

It is worth putting effort in your blog because that will inevitably direct more traffic to your etsy shop. People love to know more about the real person behind the creative facade and your blog is the most powerful tool you can use for that purpose.

Increasing the traffic is not as hard if you follow some basic rules which have already proven prolific:

Determine your audience

Even if your blog is new and you still don't have an audience you need to envision it, so as to know in what tone to write. Knowing your audience will help you determine what they are interested in. Be consistent and try to write in the tone appropriate for the theme you have chosen.

Write often

Try to write at least every other day. Bloggers who seldom update their blogs quickly loose their readership because in the Information age people easily find another source of inspiration. Strive to be interesting and versatile. Don't be afraid to experiment this is the only way to find your true style.

Answer your email and comment

Be punctual in your communication. To win someone's trust you need to prove that you are trustworthy. You don't gain gain anything if you procrastinate answering emails, on the contrary, you would rather loose.

Comment on your posts. By setting an example you encourage your readers to comment and you create a community feeling. We humans are herd animals and subconsciously try to be part of a group.

And please, please, please, take the word verification off your comment form! Make commenting easy and pleasant for your readers by ensuring they can do it quickly and effortlessly. After all, it is more important to know what they think, right?

Here is how to take word verification off: in your Blogger dashboard go to Settings|Comments and there on the Comment Form Placement (the 3rd option from the top) choose Embedded below post.

For everyone having spam problems I recommend two solutions:

If you already have spam comments, go to your Blogger Dashboard and there choose Comments|Published and manually mark the spam comments. In this way you help blogger identify spam messages and eliminate them in the future. Once you do that, the marked comments will move to your Spam Inbox.
But I believe that the most powerful tool is to disallow anonymous posting by going to Settings|Comments and on the second option, which is Who can comment? choose Registered users instead of Anyone.

Be a part of an online group or etsy team

By joining and actively participating in online communities and groups you ensure yourself yet another source of inspiration and a place where you can share your ideas and communicate with like-minded individuals. You can promote your blog by adding your blog link to your signature or profile. While there are no signatures in etsy you can still direct traffic from the forums by writing engaging content! If you do so, many people will want to learn more about you.

Use big pictures

Illustrate your posts! People love beautiful images. In photos size really matters. A big photo attracts the viewers' attention and makes them stay longer on your blog. I catch myself ignoring small photos and lingering more to the bigger ones.

Offer DIYs

People are crazy about DIYs, there are lots of crafty websites such as I share crafts and Upcycle Magazine who serve as DIY hubs and have submit forms. Once you have written your DIY just go on promoting it. Those sites will direct traffic to your blog for longer than you can imagine.

Tag your posts

Take your time and tag your posts accordingly. Tags help search engines to find and classify your blog posts.

Submit your blog posts to social bookmarking sites

By adding your posts to Social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon or Digg you increase your chances to be seen by people with similar interests and to quickly boost the traffic to your blog.

Use your blogroll widget

Adding blogs to your blogroll and regularly updating them will direct traffic to those blogs and their authors will check you out. Maybe some of them are your future fans!

Make sure your blog loads quickly

Get rid of widgets that slow the loading time of your blog. People don't have time for your blog to load even if it is worth the wait. If they really want to see your products they will click on your etsy link instead of waiting for your etsy mini to load. If they don't care about them, they will ignore your widget even if it is XLarge.

Make sure that the most important content of your blog loads quickly! You can easily determine the loading time your the items on your blog require with the help of Stopwatch. Just type your blog address and click "Start StopWatch". It will then record the time it takes for everything on your blog to load, including images, videos, widgets, etc. Modify the parts of your blog that take longest to load. My result was 5 sec.

Control the number of blog posts on your front page

The loading time of your blog is in direct correlation with the number of blog posts appearing on a page. In the Formatting tab of your Settings you can change that number. Bear in mind that from Blogger recommend that you display 10 or fewer posts on the main page.

Organize the information on your blog

Take care to make your blog reader friendly. Organize your most important information in the top section of your blog because that is the segment that gets the most views.

Don't be afraid to guest blog

Guest blogging is a great way to promote your blog. By writing valuable guest posts you expose yourself to a completely new readership. You will get a lot of followers from that effort too. There are a lot of people who are looking for guest bloggers in the etsy forums. Some bloggers, like me also openly advertise for guest bloggers. If you stumble upon a blog with guest posts you can always write an email and offer your expertise. After all, even the most successful blogger is a human whom you can approach.

8 Tips for Writing Quality Blog Posts

So everyone around you has a blog, you constantly read in all the etsy forums and on every other website about the benefits of having a blog not only for you but for you business as well. There are so many people who appear to always know what to write and when to write it, and you wonder how on earth do they do it? How do they come up with so many interesting posts and even have plenty of comments?

There comes the day when you finally succumb to the idea, regardless of your prejudices or fears. You sign up for a blog, come up with the cutest name and there you are, all alone in front of the vast Internet empire with the empty space of your brand new blog. Feel inspired?

The truth is that people are not born with the knowledge. It takes hard work, a lot of research and consistency to become successful in any field of life. But hey, don't feel intimidated, everybody has started small! Take every life challenge one step at a time and you will be surprised when you turn back and see how far you have reached by simply following yourself!

Before I give you the 8 tips for writing quality blog posts, let me stress on the fact that people come to your blog to take something from you. Be aware of that and give it to them! Whatever it is - fun, information, tutorials, etc. And don't be afraid - the more you give, the more you will get in return!

Here are the 8 tips for writing quality blog posts:

1. Target

Determine your target audience. Which groups of people would be interested in your blog and what would their expectations be? Pick up an appropriate tone for your audience.

2. Read

Every successful writer is a very experienced reader. Read extensively blogs and websites with a similar theme to yours, learn from them and put to practice what you have learned.

3. Write

Share your own opinion, don't risk of being accused of plagiarism or violating copyright laws. There is no point to copy and paste text from another website. The problem is that not only the author will soon find that out but that once Google finds duplicated content, your page rank wouldn't have a chance to get high.

4. Link

If you find something interesting on the web which you would like to share, do so! But don't just post links! Talk about your experience, and your point of view.

5. Illustrate

Everyone loves eye candy! Strive to have at least one picture on every blog post. If you haven't taken appropriate pictures yourself, the web is full of photographs licensed under Creative Commons, i.e. free to use as long as you link back to their author.

6. Interact

Do not limit yourself to posting. If you want to encourage your readers to comment, do that yourself! Reply to their comments on your blog, visit their own blogs and take the time to comment as well, everybody loves feedback! Plus, out of that interaction you will get many ideas for new posts!

7. Schedule

If you know in advance when the holidays are, you can easily prepare appropriate posts not only about Christmas and Easter but for Mother's day or any other special international or national occasion.

8. Keep it simple

Your blog's appearance is even more important than its content. You can create brilliant content but if you don't present it in a pleasant way it will not be read. Try to have a clean and uncluttered blog template. The more widgets and gadgets you put, the longer it takes for your blog to load which can turn readers off. Try to have your posts reasonably long and with short paragraphs. In the age of information you need to get to the point quickly and sharply if you want to attract your readers' attention.

Hello and good morning all you Etsy-loving, blogg-writing, awesome-stuff-making readers!

I am super excited to be posting here today - I can't wait to share this new feature with you, guys and gals...so excited in fact, I had a hard time getting to sleep last night! (Thank goodness for the little coffee shop at work!)

I'm sure you're wondering, 'What the heck is this Style File thing-a-ma-bobber?' (What's that? You weren't wondering? Oh...well...just drink your coffee until I get through the explanation.) The EtsyBloggers Style File is a collection of items from various EtsyBloggers Team members. Each month we have a team ROLL CALL; any team member who checks-in to ROLL CALL is eligible to be included in the Style File. Then I'll go through the list of shops, finding items that can be pulled together to create a complete look - anything from clothing and accessories to home decor items. I actually keep a style file handy at all times in case I am out shopping or decide to get my hair cut on a whim, I can just whip out my phone and look at some of the outfits I've saved! Our fearless team leader came to me after seeing one posted on my blog for one of our blog carnivals and wondered if I'd be willing to do this for the team...of course I said yes!

MiniMonday: AthenaWorkman

As one who worked for a few years in a Miniature Shop, I am especially excited to be showcasing Athena’s shop: http://AthenaWorkman.etsy.com. I well know the talents of being a Miniature artist, where one recreates pieces in ½” scale to be used in Dollhouses. What most people don’t realize is these Dollhouses with their precisely created miniatures, whether they are scaled down furniture or little pieces of cake, fruit, flowers, etc. created using polymer clay, are not for children. These Miniature works of art are keepsakes for decorating “Collector” Dollhouses.

Athena’s tiny little works of art are perfectly designed right down to the tiny roses on this Wedding Cake from her shop. It was hard to choose which pieces to choose to showcase here, but another favorite are her real like “Christmas Cookies”.

It is hard to believe that Athena just started these miniature creations from polymer clay just 2 years ago. Living in Nashville with her husband, dogs, and cats, and two grown daughters, she is currently focusing on making Miniature Southern food for one’s Dollhouse collection. Athena’s shop is not only a showcase of ½” scaled down foods’; one can also find pieces of jewelry designed from her own miniatures. The “Ice Cream Cone” earrings would be perfect for a little girl; while another piece, her “Pendant” with miniature foods would be perfect to attached to a chain or cording.

Friday Feature -- Tamdoll's SILVER Mountain Originals

This week's featured Etsy artist is the Etsyblogger of the month! Congrats to Tammy of Tamdoll's SILVER Mountain Originals! I love how unique her work is, with such rich textural detail -- these fabric heart charms are adorable!

1. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

Right now, in my Etsy shop, you’ll find a few handbags, some fabric jewelry and sewing patterns for my original cloth art dolls (a mermaid & a dragon). I love to create with fibers and beads – usually making things that can be worn and that are one-of-a-kind. I love to recycle & reinvent items - some of my bags and jewelry are "upcycled" art, made with reclaimed materials.

How did I learn my craft?

I’ve been crafting since I was a little girl, mostly self-taught: hand-sewing doll clothes and knitting when I was young; then making gifts for others while I was trying to be thrifty in college; until finally taking a pattern workshop in 2001 where I unleashed my pattern making skills, creating my first completely original doll, a dragon. In recent years I’ve taught myself to crochet by watching online tutorials.

My creative process is never ending - I get an idea, jot it down in words or rough sketches, let it mull for a while… could be days, weeks or even years… until I find the time to turn my idea into 3D – whether by sewing, crochet, knitting or a combination of them all. I love taking the challenge of what’s in my mind and making it into something that I can touch and feel.

2. What Etsy teams do you belong to?

I belong to: EtsyBloggers, Team EcoEtsy, New Hampshire Team and EtsyChai where I’m the blog maven.

3. Tell us two (or more) other interesting things about you.

Interesting? What will anyone want to read about?

I can often be found online (maybe obsessed a little?!), it is just so convenient (look for ‘tamdoll’): I love to read and keep my book lists online at Goodreads.com; keep track of my knit and crochet work on Ravelry.com; photos on Flickr; website favorites on delicious.com; and of course there’s keeping track of everything else I make on my blog!

In college I earned a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, wanting to be involved with computer graphics and gaming, but since then ended up doing more marketing than coding. I still love working on blogs and websites, helping out friends when their sites need some tweaking.

One of my passions is recycling – I don’t like the idea of wastefulness. To that end, I challenge myself to look at things in new ways, figure out how materials can be refashioned. Sometimes it’s one of my husband’s torn shirts used as a lining in a new pocketbook, other times it’s running the book sale for the local public library and finding a home for the unsold ones. In my community, I’ve joined the Solid Waste Commission, with my personal goal being to improve recycling in schools.

At home, I’m a mom of two beautiful high school age girls, who I’m very proud of – one knits, the other crochets, both sew, so I’m pretty happy! My oldest even has her own Etsy shop and sells yoyo necklaces locally.

4. What inspires your creations?

Everything inspires me. I never stop thinking of ideas! Song lyrics, puns, phrases, adages all become pictures or colors in my head - turning the words into images in my mind. Sometimes, this is the most fun for me, when I can see something in my mind and have the original idea. I wish I could write or draw them all down and then have someone else create them for me. Challenges definitely inspire me, creating combinations from unlikely objects or colors. I once made a pocketbook focused around a toy chicken:

Once, I was inspired to knit into a pile of gray wool roving that I didn’t know how to spin, and it took the shape of a cute round leg, turning into an elephant!

Sometimes a creation will continue to inspire me after it’s made and I’ll often think of a story to go along with an item.

5. What advice do you have for other folks selling or buying on Etsy?

Use Flickr to showcase your items. Their terms of service don’t allow selling, but I’ve had folks see my items there and through my profile or messaging they’ve been led back to my online shop.

It can’t be said enough – but if you’re a seller, your pictures need to be sharp and clear and close-up! If I’m shopping, I want to see details. If I’m blogging or creating a treasury, I want to use high quality, attractive pictures to feature. I’m always trying to improve my own pictures and I know there is lots of help on the internet, no sophisticated equipment is necessary.

6. What crafting skill(s) do you wish you had or hope to learn someday?

I wish I could draw better, even more skill at drawing cartoon-like people. I’d like to make little comics of the funny things I think of sometimes – stick figures and rough sketches are all I can manage.

7. What has been your biggest success and/or proudest moment since opening your Etsy shop?

An exciting moment –

Fairfield saw something I had made, a quilted, decorative birdhouse, using their products and have included me at their website. You can see it here with a link back to me as one of their ‘world contributors’.

8. Give us some insight on how you personally, or your shop, gives back to your community.

I volunteer quite a bit. My husband and I decided early on in our marriage that if we didn’t have money to donate, we at least had time to give to different causes we felt were worthwhile. I’ve volunteered for the public library, art groups in my town, in schools, and as a driver for the elderly .

I've picked one of my favorite recipes to share:

This is a simple summer salad using tomatoes and cheeses!
Start by slicing fresh tomatoes (home grown are even better) and arrange on individual plates.
I salt and pepper the tomatoes.
Then add a combination of cheese on top. I tend to use: feta, mozzarella,and fresh slithers of Parmesan.
Season with oregano and basil. (Using fresh is also better-just use smaller amounts)
Then top it off with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Quite tasty!

In the southern hemisphere it's Autumn right now. The days are shorter and the nights longer.

What's something interesting you have found out about living 'down under'? (Yes, the water does go down the plughole the other way :~))
If you have travelled 'down under' what did you see or do?

I chose these topics to show the international flavour of the EtsyBloggers team :-)

When my parents said we were emigrating to New Zealand this is what (as a 15 year old) I knew:

My granddad and uncle worked at the Captain Cook Museum in Middlesbrough, so I knew about the Moari people wearing grass skirts.
I knew about Captain Cook because the area that I grew up in in the North of England was known as 'Captain Cook Country'.
I saw Auckland on the TV once when the French bombed the Rainbow Warrior.
I heard a lot of: "Oh, you're moving to New Zealand... isn't that attached to Australia by the Sidney Harbour Bridge?" (It's not by the way - Australia is a different country and a good couplehours aeroplane ride away : ~))

A (ahhmm) 'few' years later I know that New Zealand has the most amazing unspoilt countryside in the Alps in the South Island, 90 mile beach in at the top of the North and the plains of the desert road in the middle. I enjoy going on holiday in the country I live in, even though I sometimes would love to go to a country pub in Britain or a castle in Europe. So the most 'something interesting' thing that I have found out living down under is that a new (in terms of history) country is just as beautiful as an old country. They just have different beauties.

Oh - and I personally think that southern hemisphere makes better red wine ;-)

And as someone who grew up with a sweetheart of a Westie dog, I couldn't help but adore this little West Highland White Terrier polymer bead.

1. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did
you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

I create polymer clay items including Pandora beads, sculpture, tiles, etc. I started working in polymer clay about 10 years ago and it just stuck.

My creative process is just a flow as you go kind of thing. I don't make any plans up, it's either hit or miss and sometimes things turn out lovely and sometimes not so good.

2. To which Etsy teams do you belong?

Etsybloggers, of course. I also belong to Polymer Clay, Polymer Clay Enthusiasts and On Fire for Handmade.

3. Tell us two (or more) other interesting things about you.

I love my family, my dog and I'm a real homebody if that's interesting ;)

4. What inspires your creations?

Dogs, dogs and more dogs.

5. How did you get involved with Etsy?

I learned about Etsy through another group I was in on E-Bay.

6. What is your biggest challenge related to your Etsy shop?

Doing everything from the creative process to advertising to packaging items, it's very time consuming!

7. What crafting skill(s) do you wish you had or hope to learn someday?

Knitting, I admire people who can knit.

8. If you had to be an animal for one week, which animal would you choose to
be? And what would you do?

I think it's obvious, I'd love to be a dog owned by me and we'd do fun things like go to the park, play in the river, fetch sticks.

9. If money were no object for just one day, what would you do?

Buy 20,000 acres of land.

10. Where else can we find out more about you and/or your creations?

MiniMonday: RusticGoth

As one who loves the “spirit” of Goth, I was glad to find this shop, and be able to feature it as May’s MiniMonday feature. RusticGoth http://rusticgoth.etsy.com, is the creation of Charlene, who describes her work as "dark and dreamy, sad and surreal in nature, and at times whimsical and weird".

I found all of these characteristics throughout Charlene’s many prints and paintings features in her shop. "Creating art is what I do...it is how I live... how I connect with the world that exists outside of my studio... how I connect with my own feelings. These feelings that Charlene bring forth in her Goth “melancholy girls” helped her get through and deal with her emotions during some dark periods in her life – the loss of her husband, and her best friend. As she mentions, you will that many of these dark little figures, are wearing their hearts on their sleeves.

I also love her little Goth Girl “Zodiac” series – this particular print is called “Aquarius”, which includes all of the symbolism that go with this sign...Element – Air...Quality – Fixed...Ruler - Saturn and Uranus...Symbol - The Water Bearer. You will also find in her shop, bookmarks which feature some of her dark and dreamy works.

Besides her many prints of “melancholy” Goth Girls, Charlene has some beautiful, dark surrealistic paintings on canvas in her shop. Two of these paintings which really caught my attention were “On the Lonely Road” and “Twilight”.

In Charlene’s own words regarding her work, she says “"Creating art is what I do...it is how I live... how I connect with the world that exists outside of my studio...how I connect with my own feelings. It is my hope that each work of art that I create, invoke a reaction, of some kind, in the viewer....and a special connection with its owner."...

Friday Feature -- Linda B's Jewelry Designs

1. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

I design gemstone and glass beaded jewelry. I am self-taught. I took a few classes in wire wrapping leading to creating my women’s wire beaded kippot (headcoverings for Jewish women), new chain and wire wrapped necklaces and wire wrapped pendants and rings. Also, I create bottlecap and scrabble tile pendants and magnets because they’re fun.

2. Do you participate in any Etsy teams?

I am on the EtsyBloggers team, EtsyBead team, EtsyTwitter team, Etsy Promotional Frenzy Team, Handmadeology team, and I lead the EtsyChai team

3. Tell us two (or more) other interesting things about you.

I am married to a great man for over 30 years and he encourages my jewelry making and comments on my designs. We love our 3 cats, Buddy, Fritz and Sammy (more pictures are on my blog)

I am an avid reader and a few of my favorite authors are Stephen King, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, Steve Martin (yes the comedian). Currently, I am reading books about Social Media, to gather information for How to Guides to Facebook and Twitter.

4. What inspires your creations?

I am inspired by the beads or gemstones: the colors, shapes and how they look together in eclectic or classic designs. The more color the better. I create both balanced and asymmetrical jewelry. I subscribe to beading magazines and challenge myself to pick one design, change the symmetry or bead shapes and colors to create a masterpiece.

5. How did you get involved with Etsy?

A jewelry designer I used to work with mentioned Etsy to me and I decided to try it. I forgot about it for a few months and then starting listing items. I started joining teams and entering design challenges. Then, I met Tim Adams of Handmadeology online and started taking some of his advice.

6. What is your biggest challenge related to your Etsy shop?

It’s tough to compete in the heavily saturated jewelry market. Each jewelry designer has a style. I work in eclectic and classic styles. It’s difficult to know what shoppers will purchase; therefore, I offer a variety of colors and design styles in my shop.

7. What is your favorite item in your shop (currently for sale or previously sold)? Why is it your favorite?

Today it's my Personalized Swarovski Bracelet

The design is a variation of a design one of my new clients showed me and ordered for Mother's Day. I'm exciting to be offering these custom order bracelets (a little late for Mother's Day), but birthdays and other events apply.

8. What advice do you have for other folks selling or buying on Etsy?

Join a team! Team members provide support, friendship, and information I promoting other Etsy sellers on my blog; it is one of my favorite blog posts. Also, I am a Twitter addict and I tweet items for team members too.

9. If you had a gift certificate to Etsy for any one item you wanted, what would you buy? (Please provide a link.)

Just one?
Today, I'd like this handmade wearable Turkish bath towel.

10. If you had to be an animal for one week, which animal would you choose to be? And what would you do?

I would be a cat, so I could catnap during the play, be spoiled by my parents and play with shiny beads, milk rings, and other toys.

11. If money were no object for just one day, what would you do?

I would create the jewelry designs I have in the back of my mind and I might take another beadweaving class.

12. What does buying and selling local handmade mean to you, and how has it affected your life?

It means taking the time to design an item, visualizing the gemstones and shapes fitting together in a pleasing design. Putting my heart and energy into each piece I create.

13. Give us some insight on how you personally, or your shop, gives back to your community.

I create jewelry and accessories out of upcycled, bleached bottlecaps and previously owned-jewelry. During certain months, I donate a percentage of sales proceeds to Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Fund.

In fact, right now, if you buy anything pink in my shop, I am putting aside money to donate to Susan G Komen.

Etsybloggers Carnival - April 25th

Welcome to the EtsyBloggers' Blog Carnival- April 25th.

Hello. Fantastic to see you. Such a bright and sunny day in EtsyBlogger Carnival land!

This month I (Alice's Owl) happen to be hosting the Carnival. I was happy to host at the end of April! Being from the land I am from which I am the winters are cold and dark. At the end of April I am usually full of inspiration and ready for fun thanks to spring being in full swing! April 2011 has also been designated Stress Awareness Month for the nineteenth consecutive year in a row. It comes at the perfect time for me, because the dormancy of winter is ending and I can get back outdoors comfortably.

It only seemed to make sense then, that the theme for this Blog Carnival would be to share our inspiration and fun/creativity with one another. There are THREE blog carnival topics we are writing about this time: (extra fun!)

1) April is Stress Awareness Month. How do you take time for self-care and help reduce stress in your life? Is there something you do each night? A practice that you do each morning? Something you do weekly or monthly? How does it melt the stress away for you? How does it make your body and mind feel? A great way to spread the awareness!

2) We are all creative people, and too often others tell me they are not creative. Lets share about our creativity! Who or what is your creative inspiration or muse? Share your muse with us. What about your muse makes you feel inspired? How does this inspiration or muse gets your creative juices flowing? When did you "meet" your muse? How did you meet your muse? Does your muse know that they are your muse? Are you coming out to them and to us?

3) Share with us your favorite part of April. What about it is so special to you? Why? Do you remember it from childhood? Did a special friend introduce the two of you? It's Carnival Time, April 11th

I knew when I saw that, it had to be the theme for my Carnival. Last week, I was looking through my calendar, to see what my work week looked like, when something special happened. The proud owner of the shop researches jewelry of each season and occasion looking for new fashion designs. She buys her materials from her local vendors and on Etsy, and has about 10 years of jewelry making under her belt. 1. April birthstone: diamond- write about it's history, gem info, whether or not you like them, or if this is your birthstone!
2. April Fool's Day: Do you participate? Tell us about a joke you played on someone, or if one has been played on you. What do you think about this "day"?
3. What is your favorite gemstone and why?
I've picked number 3.
My favorite gemstone is tourmaline. Watermelon is number one, green tourmaline comes in second.

Tourmaline is a mineral in the aluminum silicate family. They are said to have great electric and magnetic properties. You may have seen tourmaline listed as an ingredient to cosmetics and beauty products.
They are listed as semi-precious gemstones and are found is a variety of colors: green, pink, red, blue, brown, and black. On the Mohs scale, it is rated for hardness at 7.0-7.5

On the metaphysical side, tourmaline is used for its magnetic properties. It can be used to attract energy, (green) tourmaline can calm and balance the brain. Pink tourmaline has been used to stimulate love or new friends.

I'm not sure what originally attracted me to this gem, but I must say that the colors would be the first thing. I guess I like learning about its properties also.
And if you like meditation and holistic living; tourmaline is associated with the heart chakra. Another reason I like this gem!

This week's featured Etsy artist is the Etsyblogger of the month! Congrats to Karen of Mystic Wynd. Her shop is full of beautiful jewelry in a variety of styles. With so much loveliness, it's really hard to choose a favorite! But this Aspen Leaf necklace especially caught my eye. I love the simple, unique design.

1. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

I sell a wide variety of jewelry designs using everything from acrylic beads to gemstones and everything in between. I’m self taught for the most part, although I’ve taken some classes in the basics. Gosh, my creative process is a 24/7 thing… I draw on life, nature, events, childhood memories - you name it. I’ll jot down notes or throw together certain components for future projects when something flashes through my mind and eventually it becomes a reality!

2. To which Etsy Teams do you belong?

Etsybloggers, of course! BEST (Boosting Etsy Shops Team), Treasury Team for Tutti, Captains’ Quarters, Etsy Blog Team, Etsy Success, and Handmadeology

3. Tell us two (or more) other interesting things about you.

I love science and anything that makes me stretch my imagination, and I tend to be a bit of a nerd/geek at times. I currently have 7 grandchildren under the age of 6 thanks to my three children, and they are all the light of my life! My favorite getaway would be to a cabin in the mountains for a long weekend of hiking, skipping stones on a lake, hot dogs over a camp fire or hot chocolate in front of a fireplace, lots of nature photography, and maybe some fly fishing!

4. What is your biggest challenge related to your Etsy shop?

Hands down, it’s finding the time to do everything I need (and want) to do to be able to compete in the handmade market – creating, promoting, learning new techniques, and taking care of the business end of the business is pretty overwhelming at times, but I tend to be a workaholic, so for me it works!

5. What advice do you have for other folks selling or buying on Etsy?

My advice to sellers would be to put yourself on the other side of the listing. A photo and a few words are often all a buyer has to go on and you want to give them the best possible information you can. Buying something sight unseen takes a leap of faith and the more accurate and detailed your listings are, the more likely your customer is to be satisfied with their decision to purchase from you. For the people buying on Etsy, please put yourself in the crafter’s shoes – many of us put our heart and soul into our work, not to mention the time we spend buying our supplies and doing the bookkeeping and trying to keep costs down while we keep quality up. You can shop for bargains or you can shop for quality, and occasionally you’ll be lucky and find both… don’t be afraid to ask questions to make sure that what you’re buying is going to meet your expectations.

6. If you had a gift certificate to Etsy for any one item you wanted, what would you buy?

You should have put a dollar limit on the gift certificate! LOL – I’d love to have this dragon sculpture from metalbymartin - I can just imagine how beautifully it would patina over the years… sigh… I love it!

7. Which one song describes your life the best? Why?

There was a song back in the early 70’s that started out as a commercial for Coca-cola and ended up morphing into a real hit song. It’s called “I’d like to teach the world to sing” and its message is about peace and mankind working together to achieve a wonderful world. I’ve always hoped for that, so that song is kind of like my life’s vision.

A Touch of Spring Fever - An Etsybloggers Blog Carnival

The creator behind “nature’s visuals” is Michelle, who believes that everything is a part of nature, some things are just

Michelle has taken her vision of nature just one step future creating one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry, handmade greeting cards, along with some beautiful photographs of nature’s beauty through her lens.

Michelle’s love of art started when she was a child taking art classes – continuing this passion at LaGuardia’s HS of the Performing Arts – which is located in Queen’s, NY, just outside of Manhattan, which in itself is an artist’s paradise! As most of us have experienced the confinements of assignments through school, Michelle took a break from her art work, but continued with her love of photography.

As a true artist knows, that need of creating a sketch or drawing of something we see, Michelle once again picked up those colored pencils, long neglected since HS, and began her passion of art while experiencing the colors that beauty that nature offers. As the host of this EtsyBloggers' blog carnival the theme ideas were all mine It obviously wasn't a real difficult assignment considering the time of year, but the potential for inspiring posts as well as heart... uh or should I say shamrock filled posts is awesome!

1. To which Etsy Teams do you belong?

EtsyBloggers Street Team, Fantasy Artists of Etsy (FAE Team), Queer Etsy Street Team (QuEST), and Super Kawaii Pop Team

2. Please tell us about the items in your Etsy shop. What do you make? How did you learn your craft? What is involved in your creative process?

Most of my items are handmade jewelry, but I also have some original art in water colors or pencils. I am self-taught, mostly by reading books and tutorials on the internet. Usually something inspires me and I start creating, there's no set *process* per se.

3. Tell us two (or more) other interesting things about you.

Well, by day, I am a substitute teacher, certified for grades 1-6, although I sub for Kindergarten through grade 12, working my way toward a Masters in Science Education for grades 5-12. I live a few miles from Lake Ontario in the woods with my life partner, Jacqueline, and our 4 still-at-home children, who have been unschooled since birth.

4. What is your biggest challenge related to your Etsy shop?

Promoting. I am not a big salesman and you really have to be I think to get lots of sales... So I am trying to teach myself more of the business aspect of it, but it's just not one of my strengths.

5. What is your favorite item in your shop (currently for sale or previously sold)? Why is it your favorite?

Definitely Melusinia and her treasure box! I love her story, making her was so much fun, and her hair is so wild! Even her box was a foray into a new style for me... ^-^

6. What crafting skill(s) do you wish you had or hope to learn someday?

I'd like to work with precious metals and stones, real clay, oils paint... and I *think* I'd like to make glass beads or stained glass, but I'm sure I'd get burnt and cut...

7. Where else can we find out more about you and/or your creations?
